STATEMENT BEGINS important information ABILITIESCompulsion - The Archivist is able to compel others to answer a question or give a statement. It's implied that it can be taken a step further and compel someone to physically do something against their will. It's possible to resist the compulsion, but not easy. Knowing - The Archivist is able to Know certain things without having prior knowledge of them. This most often happens with relevant information to statements or the situation at hand. This is an opt-in ability. Let me know what you'd like Jon to Know. Understanding - Jon has been shown to understand written and spoken languages he's never learned. It's unclear but improbable if he can respond in those languages, as he's only ever spoken English. Inhuman Healing - The Archivist recovers from physical wounds remarkably fast. The more powerful the Archivist becomes, the quicker the wound heals. For example, Jon wakes up from a six month coma with no ill effects. He attempts to cut off one of his fingers and it heals when he withdraws the knife. Eldritch Patron - When the Archivist records or takes a statement, it's like taking in sustenance. When Jon stops forcing live statements from people, he gets weak and hungry, going through a sort of withdrawal. Similarly, when Jon is away from the Archives for weeks without reading a statement, he reports feeling sick, dizzy, and confused, and admits feeling better after reading one. Reliving Nightmares - After people tell their story to the Archivist, they frequently relive their experience in a nightmare. The Archivist shares these dreams and is always present, observing the statement giver but never interfering. This is an opt-in ability. Mindflaying - Jon can actively rip a statement from someone's mind and it forces both Jon and the other person to experience the trauma and events related to the statement. It's terrifying and it hurts and it leaves Jon incredibly drained. This is an opt-in ability. Convenient Tape Recorders - Tape recorders frequently show up and start recording on their own when important things are happening, or a statement is being given. Jon has stopped manually turning on recorders, assuming they'll record on their own if it's important. OPT-INThis list of powers is IMPORTANT - Knowing is generally an unconscious thing, Jon does not choose to do it and though it's not constant, it could pop up. Please let me know to what extent you're willing to engage with this. If your character has ever experienced any supernatural horror or is supernatural themselves, he might slip and try to compel a statement. This could include things they might not otherwise share. If you are opting in, please leave details that Jon should know below! What's a statement? A statement is a story about supernatural trauma or horror that a character has experienced. Regular, human atrocities are not as relevant to Jon. All comments are screened. Because of Jon's power, which he can't always control, this post will act as an opt out. You can comment here if you would like for him to remain relatively tame with any or all of your characters. Opt-In/Opt-Out Leave a Statement PERMISSIONSSexuality: Jon is a panromantic asexual. He is not sex-repulsed and will consider engaging sexually with characters he has built some positive CR with. There may be exceptions based on approach/events. Physical Affection: Reserved for people he is close to; Jon is not particularly physically affectionate. Hugging: He will go stiff and pull away if he doesn't know you! Kissing: See above, but with more fluster. Flirting: He may not notice that you are flirting. He is oblivious. Relationships: Build-up required, baby steps are good. Physical Violence: Jon is not a violent man and would much rather avoid it if he can. Depending on the situation, fighting back may involve forcing a character to relieve terrible memories (there is an opt-out for this). Death: If it makes sense for the scenario! Off-limits: Nothing comes to mind. Jon does have some trauma and if you would like to avoid that let me know below. BACKGROUNDJon was born in 1987 in Bournemouth. His father passed away when he was two years old and his mother died a few years later, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother. Jon was a smart but difficult child. He got bored easily and would wander off. His grandmother found books were helpful for keeping him in one place, but he hated to read anything he felt like he'd already read before. His first experience with the supernatural occurred when he was 8 years old, around 1995/96 – an early encounter with a Web-related Leitner book that claimed the life of an 18 year old that bullied him. He has had a fear of spiders ever since. He took a job with the Magnus Institute's research department in 2011 and was made Head Archivist in 2015. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
