Appearance: here
Canon Point: Episode 173: Night, Night
Background: here
Personality: First impressions of Jon usually involve the words "rude" or "pompous ass." It doesn't help that he's a particularly reserved man who isn't very good at social interaction. He has a tendency to be dismissive and condescending, but this is often a mask for the fact that he is afraid of the monsters and supernatural subjects of the statements he takes and records. However, he can be compassionate and gentle with people who have been traumatized by their experiences. As time goes on, and after several traumatic events, Jon grows more attached to his staff.
Outside of his eldritch horror life, Jon is... ordinary. He has a dry sense of humor and is often self-deprecating. He's awkward around other people and becomes flustered or irritated when conversations turn toward relationships. Jon tries to protect people through controlling information and ultimately learns that this is not the best approach. He needs to be more open, more transparent. He likes watching documentaries and hates spiders; he likes cats and smokes when he's stressed.
Jon's desire to know, driven by his connection to the Beholding, has left him traumatized and physically scarred. Despite his intelligence, Jon doesn't always have common sense: he's been kidnapped twice, and one of his most noticeable scars comes from shaking the hand of a woman who burns anyone that touches her. He knew she could do that. He knew she was upset with him. He offered her his hand anyway.
Jon is usually nonviolent: he panics if threatened and he tends to stutter when intimidated or scared. He says himself that he is not a brave man, but he is persistent. As his life becomes stranger and the events around him more intense, Jon becomes determined to see everything through: he investigates his predecessor's murder and ends up entangled in the web of Gertrude's own investigation and plot to stop the Unknowing. Despite the fact that he didn't start the mission, he picks up the threads and is determined to continue on the path she set out. Throughout, Jon documents his experiences, refusing to become "another goddamn mystery." Throughout it all, Jon finds more and more in the world (and beyond it) to be afraid of. He's been marked by the Fears and he witnesses horrors in his dreams, over and over. Despite Jon's assertion that he isn't brave, he does display courage on several occasions: particularly his foray into the Buried to save Daisy and his entering the Lonely to find Martin. At the very least, Jon can be brave for other people, if not himself. In later seasons, Jon becomes more willing to embrace a specific kind of violence through his own power if it means protecting the people he cares for. He destroys Peter Lukas for withholding information from him and is willing to force statements out of other people to get the information he needs. He willingly (sometimes eagerly) destroys several other avatars in the most recent season.
When given the choice between dying as a human or living as an avatar, Jon chooses to become an avatar of the Eye, known as the Archivist. As Jon moves deeper into his life as the Archivist, he finds that he likes the abilities that he's manifesting and he's afraid of losing himself to the dread hunger for other people's supernatural trauma. He hates that this is how he sustains himself and he struggles with intense guilt. He holds tightly to his human connections in hopes that they will anchor him and keep him from becoming one of the monsters that populate the statements in the archive. His primary anchor is Martin, who he has come to love, and for Martin he's willing to do anything.
Weaknesses/Temptations: His major temptation is knowledge: he will do unsavory things to get information if left to his own devices without an anchor. His biggest weakness is protecting other people. He will do stupid things to save or otherwise protect those he cares about and sometimes for the greater good.
Sins: Pride/arrogance, selfishness, reckless endangerment, petty cruelty, stalking, murder, enjoying the suffering of others
Powers/Abilities:
Compulsion - The Archivist is able to compel others to answer a question or give a statement. It's implied that it can be taken a step further and compel someone to physically do something against their will. It's possible to resist the compulsion, but almost everyone who has successfully resisted has been affiliated with an Entity, or is an Avatar themselves. He has an opt-in/out-out page for this.
Knowing - The Archivist is able to Know certain things without having prior knowledge of them. This most often happens with relevant information to statements or the situation at hand. Let me know if this needs to be nerfed. He has an opt-in/opt-out page for this.
Seeing - as of Season 5, Jon is able to See/Know of suffering that is happening even if he's not near it or witnessing it himself. He is aware of it under the Eye's influence.
Understanding - Jon has been shown to understand written and spoken languages he's never learned. It's unclear but improbable if he can respond in those languages, as he's only ever spoken English.
Inhuman Healing - The Archivist recovers from physical wounds remarkably fast. The more powerful the Archivist becomes, the quicker the wound heals. For example, Jon wakes up from a six month coma with no ill effects. He attempts to cut off one of his fingers and it heals when he withdraws the knife.
Eldritch Patron - When the Archivist records or takes a statement, it's like taking in sustenance. When Jon stops taking live statements from people, he gets weak and hungry, going through a sort of withdrawal. Similarly, when Jon is away from the Archives for weeks without reading a statement, he reports feeling sick, dizzy, and confused, and admits feeling better after reading one. He can sustain himself with written statements.
Reliving Nightmares - After people tell their story to the Archivist, they frequently relive their experience in a nightmare. The Archivist shares these dreams and is always present, observing the statement giver but never interfering.
Mindflaying - Jon can actively rip a statement from someone's mind and it forces both Jon and the other person to experience the trauma and events related to the statement. It's terrifying and it hurts and it leaves Jon incredibly drained. This is an opt-in only power.
Convenient Tape Recorders - Tape recorders frequently show up and start recording on their own when important things are happening, or a statement is being given. Jon has stopped manually turning on recorders, assuming they'll record on their own if it's important.
Items:
+ backpack
+ tape recorder
+ file of written statements (if these each count as one, let me know!)
